MOON YEAR ZERO – new mini-albumette

1 11 2009

Well, I came up with a title for it…….Moon Year Zero is a short collection of soundtracks for the (imaginary!) film of the same name. 8 tracks of lo-fi otherworldly electronics and atmospheres, with a nod in the direction of The BBC Radiophonic Workshop and Kraftwerk.

Its all free to download (128kbps at Last.fm or 320kbps, MP3 or WMA, at Bandcamp.com), so please go and get it!

New music on its way – Title Suggestions please

31 10 2009

Am currently adding the finishing touches to a few tracks I’ve been recording recently. Loosely themed around some of the wonderful 60s and 70s British TV sci-fi which I grew up with, the music is intended to evoke the atmosphere of such serials as Quatermass, UFO, The Tomorrow People, Survivors and Doomwatch. As you would expect, Radiophonic music is a big influence on this, but also the less heralded music of Barry Gray (of UFO & Space1999 soundtrack fame), and Kraftwerk. Ambience, however, will be the prominent vibe.
The album title is yet to be decided, and it’ll be free of charge when released, as usual.

New HealeyIsland album – Its rather good

29 10 2009

This isn’t a review, I’m not going to talk at great length about Greg Healey’s way with filmic atmospherics, electro-jazz, or his expanded audio pallette. I’m not even going to talk about his love of music which manifests itself in his own recordings and in his weekly radio show.
I’m not going to use words like ‘chilled’, ’sinister’, ‘cinematic’ or ‘diaphanous’.

No, all I’m going to say is: Go here to listen, or go here to buy. Its great!

“Seasons – The Really Early Stuff”

26 09 2009

Hello friends and comrades……..
In the absence of any actual new music from Dementio13, I’ve been trawling through my many outtakes and discarded tracks. Anyway, I thought I’d put them out as a loose compilation…of 54 tracks recorded between 1997 and 2001.
Some of the tracks are obviously sketches or half-ideas; but some of them are fully formed tracks which I’m actually quite proud of. Their lack of familiarity (to me) was a bit of a breath of fresh air…. and I had to remind myself that I’d recorded them!

Anyway, Last.fm wouldn’t let me upload an album of 54 tracks, so I’ve had to upload them as 4 ‘volumes’ (“Free leatherette binder with your first volume…”!).

So, sift through the crap and find some gems in there!
I sincerely hope you like it…..

Paul

New EP – “The Ballad Of Milton Friedman”

5 09 2009

This is the closest I’ll get to making a concept album!

I was moved to record this after reading and watching Naomi Klein’s book/documentary “The Shock Doctrine”.
The main subject is how the US and UK governments of Reagan and Thatcher used the hard-line capitalist policies of economist Milton Friedman to justify war and mass-unemployment in order to ’stabilise’ the economy. Thatcher used them to crush the trade union movement in the UK.

Early experiments with Friedman’s theories were carried out in Chile under the dictatorship of General Pinochet in the 60s and 70s; resulting in mass subjugation, kidnap, torture and murder.

Unfortunately, their legacy lives on in the form of US practice in Iraq, Afganistan, Guantanamo Bay and Abu Ghraib.

Anyway….this is where the music is….its all free (320kbps MP3s or WMA): CLICK HERE!

MySpace/Facebook Pages Updated

29 08 2009

Just thought I’d drop a hint and ask you to go and visit my various recently updated MySpace pages; I know MySpace is rather passe now (“its sooooo 2005″), but y’know, one has to keep up appearances!

Anyway, there are some free downloads over there (though better quality downloads can be had at dementio13.bandcamp.com and Last.fm):

Dementio13 at MySpace

Sal Boca at MySpace

Cwtch at MySpace

CutMat at MySpace

Meanwhile, please come and add yourself to my Facebook page.

Thanks!

A PS: myspace pages are starting to look as garrish and confusing as the lights of Vegas (though, in reality, more like Blackpool) with innumerable badges, buttons and backgrounds………so I’ve tried to strip mine back a bit. Not exactly eye catching, but if someone’s viewing it, the hooks already been bitten, right?

Recommendations – Free Music, Blogs, Podcasts, etc

Taking care of business:

Just a few quick words about a variety of things you may be interested in.

Firstly, Pixicast ep4 is now out and ready for download. You can subscribe to it on iTunes, or download it direct from a number of sources including Last.fm all free, of course. Its the official podcast of the ‘Pixie’s Palace Network’, which boasts a large international membership of independent artists (soon to be releasing a CD compilation). The podcast is one of the best sources of new independent music on the net, with a growing loyal and devoted following. Artists include Baskyl, Autorotation and TheTrees (sic), amongst many others. Its definitely worth checking out…

ANALOGUE ISLAND MUSIC SHOW ON PENWITH RADIO Along similar lines, and mentioned in some of my previous posts, is the Analogue Island radio show. Hosted by the very knowledgeable Greg Healey (aka. HealeyIsland), the show is a weekly foray into the world of electronic music. Tune in every Friday at 8.30pm BST (its also repeated, so check times; go to the Penwith Radio site to listen).

Cover art for Everything is Everything by Autorotation
Autorotation are a UK-based four piece “electronic-shoegaze” band who’s music actually straddles several genres. With a style that encompasses glitch, trip-hop, jazz and techno; the nearest generic description I can come up with is the rather nondescript title ‘IDM’ (ie: it defies clear classification!). But don’t let my lack of original terminology put you off….give them a listen and hear for yourself. A personal favourite song is ‘Mittelschmertz’ (from the album ‘Everything Is Everything’) with its cool understated vocals, jazzy electronic arrangements and moody cellos. Their albums can be purchased at Norman Records.

Finally, and as per usual, two pieces of self-promotion; but I’ll keep it short n sweet!

Monostereo – a great forum for sharing and discovering new and old experimental music. Inspired by Delia Derbyshire!

Plate One – my new album of electronica, drum n bass and neo-ambience.
